The 9th issue of the worldwide HSBC study “Expat Explorer” is on-line. 26,871 expats coming from 190 countries completed an on-line questionnaire in March and April 2016. This is the most important study, according to the number of questionnaires. They were 22,000 last year.

The study covers three aspects of expats’ life

  • Their professional life and finances;
  • quality of life and cultural immersion;
  • family life and children’s education

Y Generation

Y generation is more inclined to expatriation, and seeks new life challenges.

43% of the Y generation expats decided to live abroad for this reason (30% of expats over 55 years).

Out of the “millenials” (18 to 34 years), 49% consider that their professional activity is more fulfilling in their host country than in their home country, thanks to a better professional environment. 58% of them declare that their expatriation will make them acquire new professional skills (47% of the total poll).

London and New York are the most attractive cities

71% of the expatriates consider that an expatriation in these cities will boost they career. However, for the second following year, Singapore is at the top of the list: quality of life, professional life and income, children’s education. 84% of the expats in Singapore also highlight the level of safety.

Toronto and Sidney are appreciated for their quality of life. Dubai, Hong Kong, Zurich, and Shanghai bring the best financial perspectives.

Paris is quoted for its culture and the quality of integration.

 France is Nr 21 (Nr. 29 in 2015)

Even though expatriates consider that economic perspective in France remain unattractive, the quality of life in France helps the country to score. Easy integration in the society and quality of the health system is highlighted. The balance between private life and professional life are acknowledged as a major strength. Children also benefit from this environment.

Almost 2/3 of expats in France invested in real estate (32% worldwide).
